Fasting, celibacy, silence, isolation, simplicity, and detachment from pleasure have often been viewed as pathways toward higher awareness. To some extent, there is wisdom in these practices. When we step away from constant stimulation and distraction, we often hear ourselves more clearly. We become less reactive, more reflective, and more aware of the deeper parts of ourselves that are usually drowned out by noise. It makes sense why so many people are drawn toward this kind of spirituality. The physical world can feel overwhelming. Relationships are complicated. Society is loud. Desire can become addictive. Work exhausts us. Money changes people. Pleasure can easily become escapism. Sometimes withdrawing from it all feels cleaner, calmer, and safer.…
