A new analysis of the STEP trials suggests that semaglutide, the active ingredient in the popular weight loss and diabetes drugs Wegovy and Ozempic, remains both effective and generally safe for adults over age 65 with obesity. Researchers found that older adults taking the once weekly obesity medication experienced substantial weight loss and improvements in several important health measures, with results similar to those seen in the broader STEP clinical trial population. The study was led by Prof Luca Busetto of the University of Padova in Italy along with colleagues, including researchers from Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of semaglutide and sponsor of the study.
