I’m one of those sleepers who folds themselves into a pretzel without thinking about it. Knees up, curled, fetal, occasionally waking up feeling like I was stuffed in a suitcase. On a normal evening, it’s fine. Yet, I’ve always wondered: if recovery is what happens when you’re not training, am I making it harder on myself while I’m asleep? Because running doesn’t just live in your calves: It shows up in everything from your hips and lower back to your hamstrings and shoulders. And yes, I stretch, I hydrate, I foam-roll , and do all the things you’re supposed to do while you’re awake. I asked a few experts for the simplest version of the question, hoping to learn, as a runner, what the best sleeping position is for maximum recovery.
