I spent nearly every waking moment thinking about the Steak ‘n Shake brand for a huge hunk of the 1990s as an ad writer and art director. What it’s become is sad and infuriating. Not the stools. Not the witty banter. None of it. My maternal grandmother and grandfather got married just before he shipped out to the Pacific in WWII. After their ceremony, they celebrated by going to Steak ‘n Shake, which was understood by everyone in the part of the world where Steak ‘n Shake restaurants were in 1942, to be kind of a nice treat. This was a story I told in client meetings at Steak ‘n Shake’s offices in the Consolidated Building in Indianapolis in the early 90s, to prove my hereditary love and understanding of the brand.…
