Measles was effectively banished from the United States more than 20 years ago. Yet, only three months into the year, outbreaks are ripping through our universities and schools. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 1,714 cases of measles across 32 states. That is already nearly three-quarters of the total number of cases in 2025, which was itself unacceptably high. Just as the US has recorded cases from around the world, it’s also exporting the virus, including to its neighbour Mexico, which has been hit with a measles outbreak that can be traced back to Texas . Measles does not confine itself to one country. Measles is the public health “canary in the coal mine” because when vaccine rates drop, it shows up earlier than other less transmissible diseases, such as diphtheria, whooping cough, and even polio.…
