Former Marine CRU Officer Gets Burglary Victim To Safety After Being Shot In The Face While Taking Report

02:20

A Civilian Response Unit member risked his life to save a woman after being shot in the eye during an ambush in Texas.

Edward Zapata, a 30-year Marine veteran who joined Fort Worth Police in February, was taking a car burglary report on April 28 when a gunman, identified as 39-year-old Angel Cantu, opened fire from across the street.

Hit in the eye by shrapnel, Zapata pushed through the injury and rushed the woman to safety.

Responding officers traded shots with Cantu before he fled, triggering a police manhunt that forced several schools into lockdown.

He was eventually captured in a wooded area and now faces charges.
