Polka dots are arguably the trend this spring and seem to be going nowhere. Printed on to skirts, tops, dresses, accessories and more, the spotted motif is popping up everywhere from high end fashion ( Réalisation Par’s Sadie dress instantly comes to mind) to the high street. Never one to miss out, supermarkets are also getting in on the trend, offering an affordable way to buy into the look. The“it” girl trend of today has actually been a popular print for decades. Emerging in the mid 19th century, it gained its name through the popular Bohemian polka dance. Its popularity lasted through the 1900s ,where Norma Smallwood won Miss America in 1926 wearing a dotted swimsuit. Polka dot’s peak was cemented in the 1950s when icons like Marilyn Monroe embraced the pattern. Fast forward to today and it's a trend that's had a lasting impact in the fashion industry.
