The sun was sinking into the Pacific Ocean, painting the sky amber and pink, and I was standing on a terrace in La Jolla, California, as sea lions frolicked amongst the waves. But this wasn’t a luxury resort, it was the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego , an elegant concrete-and-travertine structure renovated by Selldorf Architects in 2022. I was attending a preview party for “Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys,” for an exhibition that began at the Brooklyn Museum in 2024. With more than 130 works by 37 Black American and diasporic artists, it is one of the most ambitious private collection exhibitions to come through San Diego . The museum itself feels purpose-built for a show of this scale and ambition, and the fact that Keys and Dean have a home in La Jolla gave the evening the feel of a homecoming.
