The dream is dead. Neon daydreams of perfect waves, breaking in fluorescent turquoise water, white sand beaches, coconut trees lining the shore – all of that is gone and forgotten. Instead, the new surfing fantasy is cold, bitter, and weird. Novelty waves are in, perfect waves are out. And one of the foremost novelty wave specialists, Blair Conklin, recently made a trip to the most anti-postcard-perfect surfing locations out there, Alaska, to score one of the strangest, most imperfect waves in the world: the Turnagain Arm tidal bore. Conklin recounts: “We rode a Tidal Bore wave during 30ft King Tides in Alaska. The Turnagain Arm tidal bore—or bore tide—is a long-lasting wave that surges down the narrow inlet just south of Anchorage, Alaska.
