Speaking to The Associated Press on Monday, Ross recounted her 16 days in federal immigration custody. She was detained on 1 April in Alabama following an alleged visa overstay, an ordeal that concluded with her release and return to France. The experience, she stated, profoundly altered her perspective on politics. During her detention, Ross was housed in a dormitory-style room alongside 58 other women, predominantly mothers.
