A hybrid Nashville-Detroit crew—GFL Trenxhbaby, Momo, Phonfrm2nine, and DJ Texas Trill—link up to remake a Boosie summertime classic. I’ll talk about the late-2010s Detroit rap boom with the same overblown wistfulness as old heads reminiscing about the physicality of the “Bad Boys” Pistons . In that pre-pandemic era, one of my favorite duos was Nuk and Mo Money , who had the livewire hustlenomics on lock . But I hadn’t thought about their collabs in a minute—until this weekend, when I randomly came across Mo Money, now known as Momo, making club music with a DJ Texas Trill-organized Nashville crew on “Do the Ratchet.” Remaking the Boosie block party anthem of the same name (dusting off old Trill Entertainment records is a cheat code, but we’ll give them a pass), the trio gets the summer started early with low-stakes bottle service music: GFL Trenxhbaby brings the melodic twerk commands, Phonfrm2nine (they’re trying to break my brain with these spellings) has the Rob49 player shit down pat, and Momo drops in…
