Long before the rise of athleisure , when brands hawking leggings and athleticwear seemed to grow by the minute, there was Nike. Opened out of Eugene, Oregon , in 1964 by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight, the brand has evolved from making shoes for pro athletes to making athletic shoes, apparel, and bags for everyone. The Nike Swoosh is recognizable worldwide, and you’d be hard-pressed to walk through a major city without spotting it on a shoe, T-shirt, or hat. I ran the New York City Marathon in a pair of Nikes, and regularly exercise in its bike shorts (Nike, if you’re reading this, please bring back this Nike One pair !).
