A story I learned is quite common: In 2016 I was in my last year of college and not yet accomplished at the piano (I studied percussion in school), but I had been fascinated with fugues since freshman theory class. I popped open a copy of the WTC1 and played the famous prelude in c major—not bad! So I turn the page to this doozy. I had no idea what I was in for, much less that this is one of his harder fugues! I would attempt this about five times over the last ten years, each time failing but learning a lot. The crucial change for me came in 2023 when I got myself a classical mentor. Then Bach opened up—along with my undiagnosed self-taught technical problems—and I learned inventions, sinfonias, preludes, and now two other fugues besides. This is a major milestone that I’ve dreamt of for a long time, but now it’s just another day. Happy to put this chapter behind me! Final thoughts: crazy he put 10 subjects in 6 measures spent countless tedious hours on articulation in the voices we all need mentors!…
