Coming off a dismal 2025 season, the Cromwell rugby coaching team set a target of finishing in the Central Otago top four. They are on target to supersede that spectacularly after a fifth straight win on Saturday, — against the all-powerful Upper Clutha team, who they beat 21-12 in an enthralling game at Anderson Park. Not only did it win them the Scott Memorial Shield, played for annually between the two clubs, but it guarantees them top spot going into the second round. "Yes, top four was our goal," coach Rodger Dawson said. "It was great to see old timers taking photographs of the trophy on Saturday night. "Many of our players had trouble recalling the last time they’d beaten Upper Clutha." It took a massive defensive effort. Cromwell made the perfect start, prop Tyson Clark scoring from an attacking lineout within 90 seconds of kick-off.
