After graduating from Columbia Law School, the Brooklyn native became a staunch courtroom advocate for the fair treatment of women, working with the ACLU’s Women’s Rights Project. In 1980, Ginsburg was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the U.S. Court of Appeals, where she served for 13 years.
