The Data Drop releases one interactive visual essay every week, and the latest is a collection of startup sounds from 1977 to the present, covering everything from the Apple II to the Vision Pro. Along with the actual startup sound, or lack thereof, in the case of early tech like the 2600, the drop includes the story behind the sound. It's quite a trip down auditory memory lane. The Windows startup sounds, including the one composed by Brian Eno for Windows 95, are permanently etched into my memory. The Windows Vista startup sound still makes me a little mad about how terrible an OS it was. The original Xbox started up with thunder, cannon attack, and a glockenspiel layered together and crammed into 25 KB of ROM. The soothing sounds of the Wii really make me miss Wii Sports and all the silly motion controller attachments I had. In the "sounds of connection" section, AOL's "Welcome" and "You've got mail!" and the sound of a dial-up modem evoke the excitement of the early days of being online.…
