Peter Richardson makes a strong case for how the upstart magazine Rolling Stone helped shape American culture after its 1967 advent in San Francisco. If anyone could, it’s Richardson, author of the new book “Brand New Beat: The Wild Rise of Rolling Stone Magazine” an authorized chronicle of the first decade of Rolling Stone, founded by 21-year-old college dropout Jann Wenner and music critic Ralph J. Gleason. Richardson will be on hand Wednesday at Oregon State University-Cascades for a free reading and discussion of “Brand New Beat.” Richardson has written previous books about The Grateful Dead and Hunter S. Thompson, two subjects intertwined with the early years of Rolling Stone, and first wanted to tackle “Brand New Beat” 10 years ago. However, two books, Joe Hagan’s “Sticky Fingers,” a 2017 biography of Wenner and Rolling Stone, and Wenner’s own 2022 memoir, “Like A Rolling Stone” waylaid the project temporarily.…
