April 30, 2026 — 6 min read El Anatsui's 2025 "XOHANAMI" — "receive our song" in Ewe — is the latest in the Safety Curtain series at the Vienna State Opera, which has invited artists to transform its curtain for 28 years in partnership with the nonprofit museum in progress. Though the Ghanaian artist is best known for his tapestries of bottle caps and metal scraps, this woodblock installation almost holds a mirror up to the audience itself, with a sea of moon-faced figures populating a crowd as opera-goers filing into a theater. Anatsui's piece remains on view through June 30, the last day of the opera house's season, serving as a visual prelude to its performances.
