WHEN MARIAJOSÉ “MOSÉ” BARRERA got into the auto repair business many years ago, her Seattle shop, Mosé Auto, was one of the only woman- and queer-owned garages in the area. Back then, her male employees would get taunted by other auto professionals about working for a woman. In that climate, Barrera built Mosé as a kind of oasis that puts anxious car owners at ease and invites community gathering. Now located deep in the industrial, no-frills part of Georgetown, the shop’s front office features a rainbow painted roll-up door and signage, potted plants, comfy faux leather seating, and a wall displaying framed depictions of flowers and Seattle scenes by Seattle artist Nikki Jabbora-Barber. Monday through Friday, the shop offers nearly every automotive service you can think of. On weekends, it’s a space for get-togethers, classes and other events — not necessarily car-related.…
