I’m on ag land in Hawaiʻi zone 11 and one of my biggest early challenges is established guinea grass. My goal is to move toward a lower-till permaculture system, not repeated mowing forever. I’m considering knocking the guinea grass back hard, then getting sunn hemp established as fast as possible so I can get living roots back in the soil and avoid leaving it bare longer than necessary. What I’m trying to figure out is the best sequence. Would you: mow/scalp the guinea grass and immediately seed sunn hemp, mow and sheet mulch first, tarp first, then seed, crimp/chop-and-drop and seed into residue, or do something else entirely? Main priorities are: reduce guinea grass regrowth, minimize soil disturbance, avoid exposing the soil too long in tropical sun, get to a dense sunn hemp stand quickly. I’d especially love replies from people in tropical or subtropical climates, or anyone who has dealt with aggressive perennial grass without using herbicide or overly tilling the land.…
