An inmate charged with murdering paedophile singer Ian Watkins told prison staff: “If I’ve killed him, you could be talking to someone famous,” prosecutors have told a jury. Watkins, the former frontman of the rock band LostProphets , was stabbed to death in his cell at the high-security facility HMP Wakefield on 11 October 2025. He was serving a 29-year sentence for child sexual offences, including the attempted rape of a fan’s baby. Fellow prisoners Rico Gedel and Samuel Dodsworth are on trial at Leeds Crown Court, charged with Watkins’ murder. On Thursday, the court heard that Gedel went into Watkins’ cell less than 20 minutes after it was unlocked for the morning. He then stabbed the former singer three times in the head and neck with a home-made knife, before handing the weapon to Dodsworth, who disposed of it in a bin.
