Seven weeks into a 10-week half marathon training plan , I was committed to completing the 12-mile long run on my schedule, even if it meant I would run through the Hunts Point section of the Bronx during the twilight hours of the morning. As a native New Yorker, born in the Bronx and raised in Manhattan, I know there are certain parts of New York City where you wouldn’t want to run alone at night or early in the morning. The South Bronx, particularly Hunts Point, where my mom lives, is one of them. If you’re unfamiliar with the neighborhood, that’s probably because Hunts Point isn’t exactly a tourist destination. The neighborhood has a complicated history, but it’s home to thousands of New Yorkers, and though crime rates have gone down throughout the years, it’s still not the safest part of New York City. But as I said, I was committed to this long run , which would’ve taken me nearly three hours to complete on Easter Sunday morning.…
