Former Chinese Defense Ministers Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu were on Thursday given suspended death sentences over corruption charges, state-run media said. Both Wei and Li were once members of China’s powerful Central Military Commission (CMC), the body that is headed by President Xi Jinping and commands the country’s military. The pair were also former members of the State Council, China’s Cabinet-level executive body. According to the separate court rulings, Wei was convicted of accepting bribes, while Li was convicted of accepting and offering bribes, China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported.
