I think the CANDU design is pretty cool. At least as a stepping stone to a Molten Salt Thorium reactor fleet (Imho) A big down side to the CANDU reactor is it needs a large ($$) amount of D²O for the moderator. There are some obvious downsides, but in theory could you use something with a smaller mol ratio of hydrogen? Sure you would have an unplanned (but not unexpected) rapid disassembly sooner or later, but would normal hydrogen peroxide have a similar(ish) moderaton profile?
