According to the World Health Organization, there is no safe level of exposure to benzene, a compound that occurs naturally in crude oil and natural gas, and can also be found in cigarette smoke. Experts say that even low levels of benzene can raise the risk of cancer. For the new study, researchers at PSE Healthy Energy, a think tank based in California, examined dozens of stoves in Italy, the U.K., and the Netherlands, finding that 40 percent leaked gas while turned off. Researchers also tested samples of unburned gas from each stove, whether leaky or not, finding benzene in every sample, generally at levels far greater than would be typical in the U.S. and Canada. Compared to North America, benzene levels were 8.6 times higher in Italy, 37 times higher in the U.K., and 66 times higher in the Netherlands.…
