Supreme Court orders nationwide rollout of ‘E-Prisons’ software to end ‘humongous’ delays in releasing life convicts

Supreme Court news: The Supreme Court has mandated the implementation of a digital module to automate the premature release of life convicts in all the states of India, aiming to eliminate the “humongous administrative delay” caused by physical paperwork. A bench comprising Justices J K  Maheshwari and Atul S Chandurkar was hearing the criminal appeal of a life convict for murder , whose case brought to the fore a state-wide crisis in how Uttar Pradesh manages the release of long-term prisoners.  “The Court realised the huge gap in implementation of the different mechanisms for early release in the State, which is marred by humongous administrative delay caused at different stages before different authorities,” the bench said on April 13. The apex court also said that it has suggested to the National Informatics Centre (NIC) that the software being used in Uttar Pradesh for the early release of prisoners be coded for nationwide implementation.…
