Training for a marathon on a treadmill wasn’t Thomas Nobbs ’s first choice. But a bitter Canadian winter kept him inside for three months straight. “We just constantly got pummeled with feet upon feet of snow and this was definitely the most brutal winter that I’ve experienced here in the last three years,” he tells Runner’s World . To find the best place to train indoors, Nobbs called every gym in Ottawa, Canada, to ask if they had a treadmill that goes faster than 12.5 miles per hour (roughly the pace of some of his tempo workouts ), landing at one with machines reaching 14 miles per hour. Because the gym was about a mile from Nobbs’s house, he packed a pair of shoes in a backpack and ran there. After changing into fresh shoes as quickly as possible, he hopped on the treadmill… for hours. Nobbs completed almost all of the workouts of his 14-day training cycle on the treadmill, clocking about 130 miles per week on the belt.…
