Riley Chamberlain just led the fastest women’s mile in collegiate history. On Saturday at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, the senior from Brigham Young University finished second in 4:20.61—shattering the previous indoor collegiate record by almost three seconds in Boston.Sprinting into the finish, Chamberlain was less than three seconds away from American record-holder Elle St. Pierre, who won the race in 4:17.83 at Boston University’s indoor track facility. The cross-country All-American had an incredible last lap, closing in 32.20 seconds for the final 200 meters to pass Wilma Nielsen of Oregon on her way to the record. Nielsen finished third in 4:21.04, and freshman Jane Hedengren of BYU placed fourth in 4:22.22.
