A person is critically injured and a road has been closed after a vehicle hit a power pole in rural Canterbury this morning.

Police said Bealey Rd in Hororata, Selwyn, was closed following the crash.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 7.50am after the vehicle hit the power pole between Derretts and Plantation Rds.

One person received critical injuries, a police spokesperson said.

"The Serious Crash Unit has been advised and the road is expected to remain closed for some time while emergency services work at the scene," the spokesperson said.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays."
