Cripple Creek council approves totem donation

Cripple Creek Mayor Annie Durham and the city council unanimously approved accepting the donation of Jon Zimmer’s 16-foot totem. With public support from the fire chief Joe O’Conor and public works director Steve DiCamillo, who brought his staff to assess the totem, the council added two conditions to its approval. One, that an engineer approves the installation of the base for the totem and two, that the city insures the move through CIRSA. Zimmer was at the meeting May 6 and reported that he had tracked his time creating the totem. Over seven months, he spent 687 hours on the work with 10 totems, each a symbol of Native American culture. Zimmer hopes to have the totem installed at the Cripple Creek Heritage Center by June 12, a week before the opening reception for Once Upon a Time in the West art show. Over the past 27 years, Zimmer has opened the show with a Native American blessing. For this one, the 28 th annual, he has included a tribute to Colorado’s 150 th anniversary.…
