Actions produce reactions. Inputs generate outputs. If you repeat the same process enough times, you should expect roughly similar results, allowing for randomness, of course. It is a comforting way to see things because it suggests that life, at its core, is predictable. And for a long time, that framework worked for me. If I sat down, wrote an email, and sent it, then I had done the task. Whether it succeeded or failed seemed tied to external variables: timing, opportunity, the person on the other side. The internal state – the way I felt while doing it – appeared irrelevant. The machine had been operated; the result would follow. But over the past few years, something has shifted.…
