Published 5:37 pm Friday, May 29, 2026 EUGENE — It did not matter that his first two throws were far from his personal best, or that he faulted on his next three attempts. Caldera’s Cooper Kanalos knew all he needed was one great throw. And his sixth-and-final throw won him the Class 5A shot put state title. “I just got out of my own way and everything just clicked,” said the sophomore Kanalos. “It was a beautiful throw. I’m so thankful to have it happen. It’s a pretty awesome feeling. My legs are still shaking.” He won the title with a heave of 52 feet, 3.75 inches. But if he didn’t have the final throw, he barely would have made the podium. Kanalos’ second throw went 45-5.25, a solid mark that was good for third at the time, but well behind his mark of 49-10 that he had as a freshman to take second at state. Then he faulted on his next three throws to slide down to seventh in the rankings. “I’ll never despair and I always have hope until the very end,” Kanalos said.…
