Caldera’s Cooper Kanalos knew all he needed was one great throw. And his sixth-and-final throw won him the Class 5A shot put state title. “I just got out of my own way and everything just clicked,” said the sophomore Kanalos. “It was a beautiful throw. I’m so thankful to have it happen. It’s a pretty awesome feeling. My legs are still shaking.” He won the title with a heave of 52 feet, 3.75 inches. But if he didn’t have the final throw, he barely would have made the podium. Kanalos’ second throw went 45-5.25, a solid mark that was good for third at the time, but well behind his mark of 49-10 that he had as a freshman to take second at state.
