A northern suburb in Sydney will become the city’s newest nightlife precinct, adding to a list of nighttime drawcards shifting west of the CBD as people increasingly seek destinations closer to home. The City of Ryde will create a designated “special entertainment precinct” in Eastwood where restaurants, bars and other venues can trade for up to two hours longer on nights when live music is offered, and one hour longer on other nights. The relaxed planning rules also prevent unreasonable single noise complaints from shutting down venues and offer an 80 per cent reduction in liquor licence fees. The policy is part of the NSW government’s broader vibrancy reforms aimed at relaxing rules and stimulating the sluggish 24-hour economy after years of lockout laws, pandemic lockdowns and cost-of-living pressures.
