Last month, Australian Olympian Ryan Gregson faced criticism after comments he made about the women’s 10K world record holder, Agnes Jebet Ngetich. On the For The Kudos podcast, Gregson talked about how his training partner and friend was at risk of being “chicked” during a 10K race because he was running next to Ngetich. In talking about running next to a woman in a race, Gregson said, “You’d just be going through all your life’s choices like, ‘How did I end up here, like why didn’t I study harder or something like that.’” The idea of “getting chicked” in a race isn’t new. For years, I’ve heard the phrase thrown around at road races when I would pass boys or men in the final mile or finishing stretch. I would hear parents and friends of the men I would pass heckle them, saying their friend must be so embarrassed to have been passed by a girl at the very end.…
