Guillermo del Toro ‘s “Pan’s Labyrinth” hasn’t lost any of its power to dazzle the Cannes Film Festival over the last two decades. The fantasy movie world premiered in competition at the 2006 festival, where it earned instant acclaim and was met with a still-record holding 22-minute standing ovation. Del Toro returned to Cannes this year to debut a new 4K restoration of the movie, and the film was once again met with enthusiasm, with the Mexican auteur receiving several minutes of applause as he took the stage. “Twenty years ago, making this movie was like going against everything at all times,” del Toro said as the clapping stopped. “It was the second worst filmmaking experience of my life, the first one being ‘Mimic’ with the Weinsteins.
