This week, Gagosian will unveil its new, bespoke 2,275 square foot gallery space on the ground floor of 980 Madison Avenue—the art-historical hub that opened as the home of Parke-Bernet Galleries auction house in 1949. The original megagallery has finally landed on the street after 37 years spent six stories above Manhattan’s madness in its 1,300 square-foot exhibition space. Director Millicent Wilner told me she considers the move a “new chapter.” After all, of all the cities Gagosian has galleries in—spanning seven countries—this is the place the dealer himself calls home. None other than Marcel Duchamp and Robert Rauschenberg are christening the new space .
