'Half Man' Director Alexandra Brodski Hopes Episode 3 "Feels Tragic": "You're Kind Of Longing For Them To Make It Work"

Every episode of Half Man so far has opened with a dreamy glimpse at Niall’s ( Jamie Bell ) wedding as it hurtles towards a violent confrontation between the groom and his uninvited guest, Ruben ( Richard Gadd ). According to director Alexandra Brodski , that’s by design. Brodski portrays the wedding as a window into the life Niall is so close to attaining if he could leave his past with Ruben behind. “Just because dark things are happening, it doesn’t mean that the world they live in, everything’s depressive,” Brodski told DECIDER during a recent chat. “First of all, I don’t think that’s how the world is. And second of all, I don’t think that that’s a very seductive way to engage an audience.” Brodski, who directed the first three episodes of Gadd’s new HBO series before passing the baton to Eshref Reybrouck, approached the show with a thorough understanding of all the “contrasts and contradictions” that make up Niall and Ruben’s relationship, which only becomes even more fraught in Episodes 2 and 3.…
