Puerto Escondido is perhaps the world’s heaviest, deadliest sand-bottomed waves in the world. And when the gladiator death pit turns on, the surf world pays attention. During the recent historic swell that lit up coastlines from California to Mexico, the famed Mexican beachbreak predictably delivered gargantuan surf. Massive lines marched into Playa Zicatela, producing giant barrels, heavy wipeouts, and the kind of organized chaos that has earned Puerto Escondido its reputation as the "Mexican Pipeline." According to many surfers and locals on hand, the swell was among the largest to hit the region in the past decade. That’s saying something, considering past swell events.
