Carie Hallford, the former Return to Nature Funeral Home co-owner who helped her then-husband hide nearly 200 decomposing bodies, was sentenced Friday to 30 years in state prison. Families who fell prey to the Hallfords’ deceit packed an El Paso County courtroom. Anticipation filled the room as they waited for Judge Eric Bentley to make the final ruling. For most of the families, the sentencing was the final page in a chapter that had taken nearly three years to close. Hallford, 49, pleaded guilty to corpse abuse of at least 189 bodies that investigators found rotting inside a Penrose funeral home in October 2023. Authorities say she and her ex-husband, Jon Hallford, maintained a lavish lifestyle and gave fake ashes to some families of the dead while many of the bodies rested inside the home for months.
