There are five games left in this United season that was long since pared down to the basics of league football, and they have a 10-point margin of safety on Champions League qualification. Carrick’s United have taken 26 points from the 12 games he has been in charge and he needs just six more to equal the total that his predecessor Ruben Amorim returned in 21 games. That all feels a long time ago, and another Carrick win meant that afterwards he could dismiss concerns about the home defeat to Leeds United on Monday night with a shrug.
