Boonzaaijer’s Dutch Bakery launched in 1999, when fourth-generation baker Stephen Boonzaaijer opened a shop in Colorado Springs.

Having worked in his father’s bakery since he was a child, Boonzaaijer was familiar with the ins and outs of the business. So he decided to pursue a formal baking education in the Netherlands.

Following his schooling, Boonzaaijer came to Colorado and went to work as a demi chef for The Broadmoor and later as a pastry chef for the now-shuttered Cunningham’s Market.

Finally, about 25 years ago, he opened his own storefront to sell pies, cakes, tarts, pastries, cookies and breads. A long line of customers soon followed. Since opening, Boonzaaijer’s business has continued to rake in Best Of The Springs awards.

The bakery also has philanthropic ties to the community, having created a pantry fund to help donate its baked goods to local shelters feeding those in need.
