News that Starbucks is opening a major new office in Nashville left a bitter taste in most locals’ mouths. Starbucks was founded here and contributed mightily to the region’s renowned coffee culture, not to mention the economic impact of the company’s roughly 3,000 employees at its iconic Sodo corporate headquarters. Now, Starbucks seems like the latest chapter in a cautionary tale about a wealthy city that forgot how to compete. Earlier this month, Starbucks said that a new Nashville office will grow to up to 2,000 workers over the next five years. “As Starbucks continues to shape their brand and expand their operations, we’re grateful that they have chosen to build a future here, creating up to 2,000 quality jobs for Tennesseans,” said Gov. Bill Lee. Taxes alone don’t drive corporate decision-making. But they are on the pro/con ledger of every business considering where to invest, grow and hire. And increasingly, Seattle’s business environment is listed in the negative column.…
