It’s Sophia Beckmon — a three-time state and national champion while at Oregon City and the current NCAA indoor national champion as a junior at the University of Illinois. By the time Beckmon was a high school junior, she cleared the 20-foot barrier. Griffin did that in her freshman year this season. “I have learned so much about her this year,” Griffin said. “I idolize her so much now. I just want to be her. Jumping with and progressing with her would be so cool. I just think that she is such an idol.” Not once but twice in meets last week, the freshman who cleared the 19-feet barrier on her first long jump of the season on March 18 broke 20 feet in the long jump.
