A domestic disturbance that led to Chaffee County deputies exchanging gunfire with a man in early 2025 resulted in him being sentenced to 15 years in prison Wednesday, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.
Richard Borrego, 55, of Pueblo, barricaded himself in a home near Garfield on Jan. 8, 2025, and fired at deputies after they deployed tear gas, prompting three of them to return fire. No deputies were injured, but Borrego underwent several surgeries for a gunshot wound, the release states.
Borrego pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder and third-degree assault, according to the release.
“The intent when fire was returned was to neutralize the threat, not wound him,” Sheriff Andy Rohrich states in the release. “Borrego has been given a second chance at life by a higher authority and I hope he is able to take advantage and turn his life around.”
The Chaffee County sheriff also credited his deputies’ training with preventing Borrego from ending his own life during the incident.
