EFL could change Championship play-off final date with Southampton ‘Spygate’ hearing deadline set

The EFL has said that the hearing into Southampton ’s spying charges will be heard on or before Tuesday, 19 May – but is planning for them to play in the Championship play-off final next Saturday, 23 May. But the Football League warned there could be changes to the fixture depending on the outcome of the investigation into Southampton and an appeal into the verdict. Saints face two charges after an analyst was allegedly found spying on their play-off semi-final opponents, Middlesbrough, last week, which is a breach of Football League regulations. Southampton, who drew the first leg 0-0 at the Riverside, then beat Boro 2-1 at St Mary’s on Tuesday and are set to face Hull City at Wembley Stadium. They will appear before an independent disciplinary commission and potential punishments, if they are found guilty, could involve expulsion from the play-offs or a points deduction. Middlesbrough are pushing for a sporting sanction, and manager Kim Hellberg has accused Southampton of cheating.…
