This may sound worse than it actually was but I felt bad and feel the need to say something to the mother to make amends. I play a non serious sport with some other women and we have training on Friday evenings. It's so non serious that the women will sometimes bring their dogs or kids to practice. One of them had her 6 year old son with her and he was wearing a football kit so I asked him what team it was for. He just stared at me and didn't say anything. I spoke to the mum, no one was in the earshot and I said "I tried asking him about his football kit but think he got a bit shy" "Oh, he may not use his words." She responds. Without missing a beat I then asked "Is he autistic?' For a second her demeanor changed and there was a bit of a pause before she said "No one has ever asked that outright. Sorry I'm a bit taken back but yes he is." I was quick to say about having an older nephew who is autistic which is why I asked.…
