I started running marathons five years ago. “And that,” as Ted Striker from Airplane! would say, “as much as anything else, led to my drinking problem.” Simply put, I struggled at drinking from aid station cups. Runners often swear by the “runner’s pinch,” where you squeeze the top of a paper cup to create a funnel for drinking, but I could never get it down. So, I started using a straw as a way to fix this. I tuck it into my watch strap and use it to drink the water from the aid station cups. It’s been a game changer, and I think more people should try it. If you’re already shaking your head, let me take a step back to explain. I’m a larger runner, which means I sweat more and have to put more effort into hydrating, especially on a hot day. Aside from the runner’s pinch, I’ve tried carrying a bottle during races, but it’s just too cumbersome to carry the entire time.
