A Christchurch man is alleged to have stolen thousands of dollars worth of fuel in over 20 petrol drive-offs.

The man came to police attention in early March when he filled several fuel cans then drove off without paying.

He was arrested when police executed a search warrant at a Burnside address yesterday, Constable Leauga Fuimaono, of Christchurch, said.

The 37-year-old man later appeared in the Christchurch District Court facing 43 charges stemming from 23 separate petrol drive-offs.

None of the estimated $4500 of fuel was recovered.

“We were pleased to be able hold this person to account for his prolific offending across Christchurch.

“The man made a lot of effort to steal the fuel and cover his tracks by using stolen number plates, but our team was focused on finding him,” Const Fuimaono said.

The latest arrest followed over 370 fuel theft related charges laid by police nationally since March 2 for petrol drive offs and diesel burglaries.
