Wednesday’s Interstate 25 Derby is something Colorado Springs Switchbacks fan Jason Smith thought would be an annual occasion. The term refers to matches played between Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids and the Switchbacks of the USL Championship. He couldn’t have been more wrong. When the two clubs meet at 7 p.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, it’ll be for the first time since 2016. It happened before the Switchbacks won a USL Championship title, before well-known current players like Juan Tejada and Matt Mahoney donned black and blue kits, before Weidner Field downtown and fireworks after home matches. Back when the club played at what is now Martin E. Ragain Field off Powers Boulevard and the Switchbacks were newly formed. Colorado Springs faced the Rapids twice in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, once in its inaugural 2015 season and again the following year. The Commerce City club won both contests.…
