Kate Doane, Cheyenne Mountain ready to embrace new and old challenges at state meet

Kate Doane is the perfect person for the job this weekend.  The Cheyenne Mountain boys’ swim team will have 14 athletes at the 4A state meet at the Arvada Aquatic Center on May 8-9.  For some, it’ll be a different experience. Doane’s son Townes is a freshman who ran cross country in the fall. He considered track this spring but chose swimming. He’ll be competing in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle events.  Jacob Birkby is a senior for the Hawks. This is his first season back with the team since his freshman year. He’ll race the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke.  It’ll be a familiar, but different, experience for Doane herself. She returned as Cheyenne Mountain’s coach this season following a three-year hiatus to watch her son compete in middle school. Previously, Doane coached the boys’ team from 2010-2022, capturing four state titles in the process.…
